What are Radio Waves?

A radio wave is part of the electromagnetic spectrum, and has frequencies between 3kHz and 30MHz. Radio waves are most commonly used for communication, both for mobile phones and for radios. The reason for this is that they are relatively harmless, can be used over very long distances and can hold a good amount of information.

How are they produced?

Radio waves can be emitted from a moving charged particle. In practice, coils of wires are used because an electrical current is simply a flow of electrons. An alternating current forces electrons in the wire to change direction very rapidly; this causes them to emit electromagnetic radiation. The frequency at which they oscillate governs the frequency of the electromagnetic wave produced. Click here to learn more!
